History

Measurement format is Height x Width x Depth [image size]
Units are in inches

1973

Untitled

Size: 19 x 25-1/4
Material: Ink on parchment
This is the oldest work I still own. The piece was originally matted in the brown paper bag the parchment came in.

1974

Water

Size: 18 x 24 [6-1/8 x 16-1/8]
Material: Ink/airbrush on paper
I was happy with this piece, but felt the airbrush was too limiting. It was at this time that I expanded my materials to include acrylics.

1976

The Harlequin

Size: 18 x 15 x 1-1/2
Material: Acrylic on canvas
This is one of the last paintings I’ve made where I blended colors – I was finding this process to be tedious. At this point I started producing minimalist & pattern works, primarily on paper, and primarily in black/white/gray.

1978

Untitled

Size: 26-1/4 x 40 [8 x35-1/2]
Material: Acrylic on paper
This was a typical study for a piece that was planned for stretched canvas, hardware & (probably) plastic. However, I did not have the tools required to make these pieces – a big challenge for young artists.

1980

Untitled

Size: 44 x30
Material: Rotring inks on paper
The pattern work I was doing lead me back to using color, and culminated with this group of pattern works. The drawings were made using the Pelikan Graphos pen system – a casualty of the “modern” age.

1981

Statements Without Belief

Size: 22-1/2 x 15
Material: Ink & Zip-A-Tone on paper
The piece is shown in its current state. The yellowing is from the (non-archival) adhesive of the Zip-A-Tone material. Zip-A-Tone is another casualty of the “modern” age.

1981

Statements Without Belief

Size: 22-1/2 x 15
Material: Ink & Zip-A-Tone on paper
The piece has been digitally edited to remove the yellowing from the Zip-A-Tone adhesive. This is how the piece looked originally. It was selected to be in the 1981 MAG Finger Lakes Show.

1981

Baked Tympani

Size: 30 x 44
Material: Adhesive vinyl on paper
This is a one-off piece using dumspster-dived die-cut material. Some of the vinyl has shrunk with age, and again, the adhesive has been problematic.

1982

Echoes

Size: 23 x 22-1/4 [18 x18]
Material: Gouache on paper
The “Walking Man” icon/avatar appears for the first time in this painting. This is the first image in a group of four sequential images.

1982

Running from Heman the Human

Size: 23 x 22-1/4 [18 x18]
Material: Gouache on paper
This is the second image in a group of four sequential images.

1982

Scalloped Potatoes

Size: 23 x 22-1/4 [18 x18]
Material: Gouache on paper
This is the third image in a group of four sequential images.

1982

Commodore Omnivore Ponders the Base Poetic

Size: 23 x 22-1/4 [18 x18]
Material: Gouache on paper
This is the fourth image in a group of four sequential images.

1983

Untitled

Size: 29-3/4 x 22
Material: Tempera on paper
In mid-1983 I contracted “artist’s block”. Being unsure of where to head next, I some bought large jars of tempera paints, which allowed me to experiment without using expensive materials. This image has always stuck with me, and has been re-used in a recent painting.

1984

The Cyclic Cynic Saw

Size: 23 x 22-1/4
Material: Ink & Zip-A-Tone on paper
In 1984 I went back to doing some cartoons. About this time, while sheets of lettering were still available, the sheets of patterns started to become unavailable. The image has been digitally edited to remove the yellowing from the Zip-A-Tone adhesive.

1984

Untitled

Size: 19-1/2 x 22 x 6-1/2
Material:Gouache on paper & wood
At this time, I also started playing with the third dimension. The first pieces I made used paper and modelmakers wood stock that could be processed with a X-Acto miter saw. It was also at this time I started acquiring some power tools.

1985

Fast Walker

Size: 34 x 29 x 13
Material: Oil enamel on wood
About this time I started working as a commercial painter. A fringe benefit of the job was leftover cans of paint – kind of like dumpster-diving without some of the hazards.

1990

Untitled

Size: 48 x 48
Material: Rotring inks on paper
Pen & ink. THREE MONTHS. I had to build a table top that was large enough for the paper as well. I didn’t try to do this again.

1991

Untitled

Size: 30 x 30
Material: Rotring inks on paper
More patterning (is a pattern starting to emerge here?). Pen & ink, but also starting to use brushes

1998

Untitled

Size: 37-1/4 x 37-1/4 x 1-3/4
Material: Acrylic on canvas w/hardware
20 years later I had the tools and the skills to build some pieces like I had envisioned in 1978.

2002

Untitled

Size: 22-1/2 x 22-1/2
Material: Acrylic on paper
About now, the pen disappears and is replaced by the brush. That is still the case today.
